Ben RoethlisbergerIt is being reported that NFL commisioner Roger Goodell will make an announcement on a punishment for Pittsburgh Steelers’ quarterback Ben Roethlisberger this week, possible as early as Tuesday.

When asked if he would announce Roethlisberger’s suspension Monday or Tursday, Goodell did not give a decisive answer, saying, “There may be plenty of reports. I make the decision when I’m prepared to do so”. Read more…

Baltimore Ravens Make Jim Zorn Quarterbacks Coach

Jim ZornThe Baltimore Ravens have made the best offseason move thus far in the hiring of Jim Zorn as the new Quarterbacks Coach.

His hiring came after former quarterback coach Hue Jackson left to join the Oakland Raiders as their new offensive coordinator.

Zorn is coming off an embarrassing two-year tenure as the head coach for Washington where he led the ‘Skins to their worst record in fifteen years at 12-20. His team came close to victory time and again, but was never able to overcome the mistakes of an inane owner and a rookie head coach.

Owner Daniel Snyder promoted Zorn from offensive coordinator to head coach before the season ever began; the team’s first mistake. Read more…

Gaines Adams Dead at 26

AdamsChicago Bears defensive end Gaines Adams was pronounced dead Sunday morning at Self Regional Hospital in Greenwood, SC.

Gaines was rushed to the emergency room in the early hours of morning and, while the cause of death or concern is still unknown, the coroner has divulged that Gaines appeared perfectly healthy before his death was pronounced. An autopsy is scheduled for later today.

It seems 26 is the unlucky number right now in the NFL. This story strikes a chord as it follows the death of Cincinnati’s wide receiver Chris Henry no more than a month ago, also at the tender age of 26. Read more…

Alex Gibbs Headed to Seattle: Carroll’s Best Hire Yet

Alex GibbsSeveral sources within the NFL reported today that the Houston Texans’ offensive line coach Alex Gibbs is headed to Seattle to serve under new head coach Pete Carroll.

With two assistants from USC following Carroll to Seattle already, it’s refreshing to see a non-USC coach making his way to the Seahawks organization. Although he’s only officially been the head coach for a day or so, this is Carroll’s best decision yet. Read more…

Seahawks, in Compliance with Rooney Rule, Contacted Tony Dungy

Tony DungyThe Seattle Seahawks have taken a lot of criticism of late, facing claims that their quick hiring of Pete Carroll was outside the lines of the Rooney Rule.

It’s now come to light, though, that the Seattle organization reached out to Tony Dungy almost a month ago in regards to a position as their team president. Dungy considered the offer, but ultimately turned it down.

John Wooten, chairman of the Fritz Pollard Alliance responsible for monitoring the minority hiring process in the NFL, spoke of the offer, “They called Tony about three weeks ago to see if he would seriously consider becoming their president…He told them he wanted to pray and sleep on it but the next day he called them back and said he wanted to stick with everything he was doing now.” Read more…

Miami Dolphins Part Ways with Defensive Coordinator Paul Pasqualoni

PasqualoniNumerous sources have cited that the Miami Dolphins have decided to part ways with their defensive coordinator, Paul Pasqualoni.

In a press release, head coach Tony Sparano said, “I want to thank Paul for his services to the team, and I want to wish him the best.”

Pasqualoni is coming off a season in which his defense ranked 22nd in the league. The real kicker was the NFL-high 140 points his crew gave up in the fourth quarter.

It seemed at first that Sparano would be lax in his judgement against the coach, attributing the poor play of the defense to a lack of execution by the players, but the fourth-quarter debacles and the defense’s susceptibility to the big play spurred Sparano to make the decision. Read more…

Jeremy Bates Follows Pete Carroll to Seattle Seahawks

Jeremy BatesESPN reported today that former USC quarterbacks coach Jeremy Bates will opt to become the new offensive coordinator for the Seattle Seahawks rather than perform the same role with the Chicago Bears.

In an interview with ESPN reporters, Bates expressed that he felt he had more security in Seattle than in Chicago due to his former coaching relationship with Pete Carroll.

It was believed that Bates might go to the Bears in order to be reunited with Jay Cutler, a former player of his when he was the offensive coordinator in Denver. Read more…

NFL Quick Hits

 Tarvarius_Jackson__2

Minnesota Vikings Actively Shopping Tarvaris Jackson

Are you surprised?

After Brett Favre’s solid showing in the Vikings third pre-season game, as well as the trade for Sage Rosenfels in the off-season, the under-whelming Jackson was clearly the odd man out.

Reports have T-Jax bringing back Minnesota nothing more than a mid-round pick in next year’s draft, and with little-to-no leverage, they’ll be lucky if they get that.

Jackson is still a young, athletic passer with a good amount of potential, but there doesn’t appear to be a clear front-runner for his services in 2009.

Just know that he won’t be wearing purple.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers Fire Offensive Coordinator Jeff Jagodzinski

This close to the season?

We’re smelling something fishy here, and it has nothing to do with Marlins or Dolphins.

Jagodzinski has been marred in controversy for the past year due to his personal decisions on coaching both in college and in the NFL, but this takes the cake.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter made the report on his Twitter, not citing any reason for the move.

And we thought Tampa Bay’s offense was going to struggle before.

Michael Vick Reinstatement Decision Coming Soon

Everyone knew the six-game suspension commissioner Roger Goodell originally inforced wouldn’t stick, but we didn’t know it wouldn’t even last through the pre-season.

Early rumors are supporting a Vick return around week three, and possibly even for week one, making the Eagles signing of him ever so clever. Maybe.

ESPN’s Sal Palolantonio has been covering the story since it broke before the Favre fiasco ended, but we’re still where we were at back then.
Vick still isn’t cleared to play for week one, and still doesn’t have a defined role in Philly’s offense.

Tennessee Titans Work-out Receiver Matt Jones

The ex-Jaguar is getting his first official look from an NFL club, even after a humbling interview on ESPN about a month ago.

Jones still has outstanding size and speed, and even though he knows nothing of Tennessee’s offense, he could still emerge as their top receiver if signed.

As it stands, he’d probably step in behind Justin Gauge and Kenny Britt, while surpassing the injured Nate Washington.

The Chicago Bears and Dallas Cowboys, both in need of an impact receiver, are reportedly keeping a close watch on the situation.

No Progress in Brandon Marshall Trade Talks

The heat is on Josh McDanies and the Broncos, as they have heard plenty of interest from the New York Jets, but still have a hefty asking price on the table.

The reported offer has been Marshall for a New York first round pick, along with veteran linebacker, David Harris.

If Denver doesn’t budge on either Harris or the pick, the reportedly won’t happen.

Bengals’ Carson Palmer Expected to be Ready for Opener

Isn’t this the same news we got all of last season?

Palmer was apparently at full health heading into pre-season, but then arm questions again emerged.

This time the concern is over his ankle, but with soid practices lately, head coach Marvin Lewis is holding him out of the final pre-season game, merely as a precaution.

Brett Favre to Sit for Minnesota’s Final Pre-season Game

This isn’t news, but since it’s Favre, it still makes headlines.

Add the arm surgery, his age, and the reported cracked rib all together, and you’ve got a concerned Brad Childress.

Besides, they may want to give Tarvaris Jackson the full stage as they try to up his value in the wake of trade rumors.

Favre will be more than ready to go for the season opener at Cleveland.
